India’s response to China’s offers: Wang Yi visits New Delhi.

New Delhi was visited by the Chinese Foreign minister, Wang Yi, on 24th March and this is the first high level interaction between the representatives of the two countries since the military standoff on LAC in 2020. The visit was quick and unannounced; the Chinese Foreign Minister arrived on thursday through Islamabad and Kabul and left the next day. He met with the Nation Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, S. Jaishankar. The aim of this rather sudden visit was to re-stabilise the relationship between the two countries and resume bilateral dialogues and high level engagements. The visit is an important event which will act as the background and be crucial for the 2022 BRICS summit and its outcome.

China released a statement hours after the meeting saying that India’s stance on the issue does not keep the long-term interests of the two countries in mind, that the development of each sides should be considered so that there a win-win situation. It seems like China wants to forget the sour past and turn over a new leaf. All this happening as China is slowly backing trying to distance itself with Russia amidst the current situation in Ukraine and needs a more stable international partner in the region; but the Indian government is firm about its position on the matter.
