Exam fever - burning the midnight oil

Spring blooms with the onset of April, and alas ,so does exam season . While many states have state-board exams being held already and CBSE boards coming up this 26th ,the mental well being of children during this strenuous time is a sensitive issue that needs to be addressed.

Majority of students in India have been attending school in the online mode for more than a year now. Online classes while one may argue aid in social distancing proved to be a sure shot solution allowing children to continue their education uninterrupted, during this pandemic, but there's more to it than meets the eye, online classes come with its own baggage, in a classroom, there is motivation for bright students as they answer first, get appreciation from their teachers and shine in the class. This motivation is completely missing in online classes which is causing anxiety and depression. Dr. Bharat Reddy, senior consultant psychiatrist at Apollo Hospitals, says, "The uncertainty about academic programmes is causing good students to dread another year of online studies. It is affecting their interest in studies as they have been groomed for competitive exams right from the beginning. But in the last two years, the academic schedule is such that students are not getting a chance to compete and excel."
While online classes is 'easier' to attend for some people it is not so for all, majority of the middle and lower middle class children are studying online while the rest of their family members are around. They find it hard to concentrate on studies as the houses are in a mess with  kitchen and house work all going on at the same time.

Experts suggest schools should go slow with engaging the students as staring on screens for long hours makes fatigue set in, students be divided into smaller classroom for a better teacher student interaction and to change the way assessments are being taken. Lastly, parents play a key role in this as well, supporting them in terms of space, talking to them and keeping a healthy and wholesome environment for them to study peacefully while having a healthy way to vent out their stress.

Thats it folks, I wish you the best of luck for your exams and your future endeavors.
